Tonsillectomy

  1. No heavy lifting >20lbs or heavy exercise for 10 days

  2. Follow-up either via phone or in clinic as arranged

  3. No specific dietary restrictions, eat what is comfortable

  4. Ensure you drink plenty of fluids - small sips hurt just as much as big sips!

  5. You will be given prescription for Codeine (or equivalent). This can be taken on an as needed basis for pain not controlled by regular acetaminophen and ibuprofen

  6. Take 1000mg of acetaminophen (Tylenol) every 6 hours. Take 400mg of ibuprofen (Advil) every 6 hours between doses of tylenol (you will be taking scheduled pain medication every 3 hours)

  7. Despite this oral analgesia regimen, you will still have pain. Tonsillectomy is a painful procedure. Do your best to follow this regimen and stay hydrated.
